Start with a test kit
A test kit is a small detector you set out in your home, then mail to a lab for analysis. EPA's steps start with a short-term test; our testing guide explains them. Both kits below include the lab fee, and both the device and its lab are on the NRPP's list of approved laboratories.
-
Short-term (charcoal)
First Alert RD1 Radon Gas Test Kit
A low-cost first test: set it out for a few days, mail it to the lab and get your result by email a few days after the lab receives it.
- Test time
- 2 to 4 days, in the lowest level of your home
- Included
- Lab fee included (except New Jersey state fees)
- Lab
- Eurofins Environment Testing Radon (formerly Alpha Energy Laboratories), NRPP-approved

-
Long-term (alpha track)
AccuStar Alpha Track AT-100
A long-term test gives a better picture of your year-round average than a test of a few days.
- Test time
- 91 days to a year
- Included
- Lab analysis and a post-paid return mailer included
- Lab
- AccuStar Labs, NRPP-approved
- Note
- Not available in New Jersey.
Kit details are from each product's Amazon listing and maker, and lab approvals from the NRPP's list, checked on November 4, 2026. Your state may give away kits or sell them at a discount: see free and discounted radon test kits.

Which one fits what you want
These follow from the features above, not from our own testing.
- No app, no Wi-Fi: the Corentium Home (or the same detector in black) shows its averages on its own screen.
- Readings history on your phone: the Corentium Home 2 connects to the Airthings app by Bluetooth and shows 24-hour, 7-day, 30-day and long-term averages on screen.
- Alerts while you're away: the View Radon connects over Wi-Fi, so readings reach the app without your phone nearby.
- Radon and general air quality: the View Plus adds particulates, CO₂, VOCs and air pressure. The Duo is two of them, for two floors.

A monitor shows how your radon level changes from day to day. To decide whether to fix your home, follow EPA's steps in our guide to testing for radon. Some states also give away or discount test kits; where to buy a radon test kit explains how to find them.

Where these facts come from
Monitor specifications and prices are from each model's product page on airthings.com, checked on November 4, 2026; Airthings may change them. Test kit details are from Amazon, First Alert and AccuStar, and lab approvals from the NRPP's approved laboratory list. We don't show Amazon prices because they change often; the Amazon button shows the current price. Hands-on reviews will follow once our test devices arrive; see how we test.
